Working From Home
Starting a business from home can be very rewarding. The economic roller coaster we have been riding lately may have force some of you to pursue this option. To be successful you will have to educate yourself in several different aspects of business. You will have to wear the many hats that larger companies have employees for, such as manager, bookkeeper, human resources, IT and front-line worker. It is very important you understand every aspect of your business in order to compete in today's market.
For those of you looking for the get rich quick route, I'm sorry to say it's a myth. The many self made millionaires in the world will confirm it took long hours, hard work, and diligence to make it, hell even a little bit of luck. Making a good living is not out of reach. With a solid plan and good business practices you to can grab your own little slice of the pie.
By following these rules below it will help you stay focused on the task at hand which is to make money.
Rules for a Profitable Home-Based Business
- Do the required preparation for your home-based business. It is absolutely important for a beginning entrepreneur to do the research and planning necessary prior to starting there venture.
- Make sure your business idea can legally be operated from your home. Check what local laws pertain to the type of enterprise you plan on operating. Some areas may also require certain operating licenses issued by there respective county, state, and federal government offices. It would be ashamed to perform all the hard work necessary to start your business only to find it is an illegal operation.
- Place your work area away from the hustle and bustle of your home. That means a secluded area where you can concentrate without distraction. I know it's hard especially with children but you need to be focused on making your business work. Lay some ground rules for your family. Running a operation from home is an exiting experience. However, in order to be successful you will need to make quality time for your business as well as your family. Express to them the reason you cannot be disturbed at certain times of the day.
- Find your niche. Try not to be a one stop shop for everything in your field. Being the go to shop for everyone's needs would be nice, but it is a lot easier to break into the market if you specialize in one area. You will save precious time and money perusing perfection in one specific service or product.
- Buying the right equipment is essential to competing in the niche of your choice. This should fall in the planning stage of your home-based business. Insure before you buy equipment, perform the proper research and compare prices with several companies. The last thing you want to do is buy equipment that does not perform to your expectations.
- Pick a name a specifically describes your product or service. This should be your first marketing decision. For example if I were to opening a lawn care service I wouldn't use "Chaoui's" alone as the name for my business. If I use "Chaouis Lawn Care" it gives an identity for the services I offer and will not leave potential customers guessing about what I do.
- Hire or get advise from an accountant. If you are unfamiliar how to put together monetary tracking forms or tax laws, an accountant can be a blessing. Home-based businesses may also take advantage of certain tax breaks. Do your research, if you find that there are tax breaks available to for your business. Get verification from a reliable source. If you have to, visit the IRS website or even call them.
- Have a dress code. I know you may like working in your pj's but it is important for you to have a professional appearance when dealing with your clients and peers. The image you portray reflects on you and your company.
- Make sure you and your work at home venture are covered with the proper amount of insurance. Shop around with different insurance providers. Insurance can get pricey depending on the type required by your company. Ask about a business owners policy .
- The most important rule for the work at home entrepreneur is to believe in your business. If you don't who will?
Staying Focused on Your Business
Distractions come at us everyday in many forms. Learning good time management and organizational skills will help you focus. You will have long hours, there is really no way around this if you want to be successful at your home-based business. I myself have a picture of my kids I keep handy to look at when I am feeling discouraged or distracted. This gives me the motivation to press on and actually brings flashes of genius at times. I guess the main point here is you need something that you can draw some sort of motivational inspiration from. Of course money can be a good motivator but I really feel you must have a deeper reason to want to succeed. A good exercise would be to write down no-holds bared list of why you want your enterprise to succeed. You may be suprised at what you find.
I hope this has helped someone out there. Until next time.

Excellent article! Couldn't have written it better myself. I've found that there is a vast difference in my work productivity when I get out of those pj's and work like I'm in an actual office. It's always easy to slip back into bed for "five more minutes".
As for point #2, I had made the mistake of operating without proper licensing and permits. Fortunately, I had a former supervisor who warned me against the legal problems I could faced and even helped to me to get sorted out before I got into any trouble.
Again, excellent article.
